AMERA is a human rights organization that provides free legal, social and mental health services to the hundreds of thousands of refugees in Egypt. For the last ten years, AMERA has tirelessly served people who have fled their home countries due to persecution, conflict, torture, trafficking, violence and terror. We work with refugees (mostly from Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea) to rebuild their lives and provide safety to their families. 2009 “An Exploratory Study of Child Domestic Workers in 9 villages in Giza District, Egypt”, Terra des Hommes, US$22,500.

WORKS IN PROGRESS
“An exploratory study of girl domestic workers in Giza”. Girls domestic are at risk of child trafficking and sexual exploitation. All experts agree on pinpointing this issue as a main at risk situation of trafficking for forced labour. However, there are no data on this issue (neither at national nor at local level) in Egypt. The project is in collaboration with the international NGO Terra Des Hommes, in Cairo.

“Domestic Labour Crisis During and Following Israeli Invasion of Lebanon, July-Aug, 2006” In conjunction with the Arab Family Working Group, the research phase for the current funding looks at the conflicts in Lebanon beginning with the Israeli invasion in Summer 2006, subsequent internal crises and the effects on family life.

"A Social Profile of Migrant Domestic Workers in Lebanon" ongoing analysis of data collected from 610 interviews with Sri Lankan, Filipina and Ethiopian migrant domestic workers – completed in April, 2006. The first presentation of selected findings from the complete data set was presented to a tripartite legislative reform steering committee at the Lebanese Ministry of Labour in Beirut, 4th June 2006.

“A Social Profile of Migrant Domestic Workers in Cairo”: a comparative study of both migrant and Egyptian domestic workers in Cairo, funded by the University of Sussex Development Research Centre. Begun in January, 2007 the survey interviewed Egyptian, Indonesian, Filipina, Sudanese, Somalian, Eritrean and Ethiopian domestic workers in Cairo (sample size 780).

2004: Core member of a 16-scholar Arab Families Working Group, which has raised $500,000 from the Ford Foundation ($150,000), and from the International Development Research Center ($366,200), as well as around $150,000 from the Population Council, UNICEF, IDRC, and AUC SRC. AFWG is co-housed at AUC and UC Davis and the funds are housed at UC Davis.
