Call for Editors: Journal for Internal Displacement
Location
Canada
Deadine / Event Date:
2009/07/10 - 14:45 Brief Summary
Migration within borders has become a major global health concerns as people are forced to leave their place of habitual residence because of war, internal conflict, development, poverty, natural disaster, modernization, climate
change, poor governance and more. Providing protection and assistance to this unique yet complex group of people have become debatable as the international human rights regime grapples with not only who responsibility it is to protect but also whether the creation of a new internal displacement law is necessary and timely. To date there is no journal existing to advance debates and scholarship on the plight of internally displaced people around the world, hence the creation of the Journal of Internal Displacement. The JID aims to raise the profile of internally displaced persons by creating a platform whereby, young scholars representative of this group and others can disseminate and exchange ideas on internal displacement issues. The JID will have a wide readership including researchers, lawyers, doctors, students, psychologists, journalists, advocates, policy-makers, individuals as well as members of diverse public and private institutions.
Problem Statement
The complex and diverse nature of internal displacement have created serious controversies and ideologies around who, when and how to protect IDPs. Apart from the lack of legally binding instrument on internal displacement, the UN has not assigned a specific unit to deal with global IDP concerns, except for an ad hoc discretionary position – the Representative of the Secretary General on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Person – created and appointed by the UN Secretary General. Consequently, the protection and assistance of internally displaced persons have been criticized for being disorganized and problematic.
Scope and Focus
The JID, a product of EV Research Inc, is an inter-disciplinary platform for discussions, critical dialogue, emerging themes, reflections and explorations on a wide range of topics and regions around the globe. To accomplish its aim,
the JID has four major objectives:
- To raise the profile of IDPs through academic and non-academic scholarship;
- To provide a platform for young scholars from internally displaced communities to be heard;
- To contribute to law and policy reforms related to IDPs; and
- To create an inclusive environment from young and emerging scholars from developing countries to engage in critical debate on IDPs.
Central thematic volumes on various topics relatable to IDPs will characterized the JID publications. In particular, JID will develop special themes targeted at scholars from developing countries who may have experiences of being internally displaced. By so doing, these scholars who are often denied opportunity to publish in other peer-reviewed journals will be given the chance to take leadership role and contribute to social change. Special thematic volumes will include articles, reports, commentaries, book reviews, and debates on topics ranging from internal displacements caused by development, conflict, war, natural disaster, economic hardship, marginalization, modernization, poor governance, ecological factors and more.
Language
The JID will begin production in English but eventually it will be produced in other languages including French, Kiswahili, Spanish, Chinese, and other local dialects where necessary
