The Center for Forced Migration Studies (CFMS) at Northwestern University will host its 2nd annual Summer Institute, entitled "Settling Resettlement" from July 8th - 14th at Northwestern's Evanston, IL campus.
Resettlement has long been one of the durable solutions for refugees. While there have been large-scale resettlements to the US and Northern States, most refugees are hosted and will remain in the world’s poorest countries; countries that lack the capacity or will to absorb refugees, do not have established asylum systems, and where refugees have little access to most of the rights and protection mechanisms enshrined in international refugee and human rights law.
The theme ‘settling resettlement’ offers a framework under which to explore these rights and the protection of the world’s refugees. The curriculum will address ideas of global-burden sharing, the role and responsibilities of UNHCR and other NGOs, access to legal representation, refugee mental health, and current resettlement systems; all within the greater discussion and study of the sociological, political and historical context in which refugee situations are created and addressed.
The CMFS Summer Institute provides a forum for professionals, academics and practitioners to learn, exchange ideas, build relationships and develop new approaches and policy recommendations related to the field of forced migration studies, resettlement, protection and law.
