International Voluntary Sector Organization and Agency Partnerships

The International Association for the Study of Forced Migration (IASFM) is an independent, self-governing community of scholars and practitioners who are concerned about understanding forced migration and about improving the formulation of policies and administration of programs dealing with refugees and other displaced persons. The membership forms an open, international, collegial community, receptive to meeting with and learning from others and is not simply an academic organization but includes practitioners and policy makers.

Collaborators - Canadian Universities

Howard Adelman is the founding director of the Centre for Refugee Studies at York University and is currently a Research Professor at the Key Centre for Ethics, Law, Justice and Governance at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. He has published or edited 21 books and well over 100 academic articles in refereed journals or as chapters in books. In the area of forced migration, his current work focuses on refugee protection and the rights of return. He also writes on genocide and on the ethics of intervention.

Principal Investigator and Co-Applicants

Susan McGrath, the Project Director, is Director of the Centre for Refugee Studies, Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at York University, member of the Governance Board of the Ontario Metropolis CERIS and Vice-President of the International Association for the Study of Forced Migration. McGrath’s research includes two SSHRC funded projects focusing on issues of settlement and collective trauma and two international research projects.
